TOMMY MATLON AND TEAM SEEKING SAME RESULT IN STATE TITLE FIGHT REMATCH TONIGHT

Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Tommy Matlon (2-2, 1 KO) and 34-year old Riverside, Illinois native Dominicc Hardy (5-1, 3 KO’s) meet tonight in Wisconsin State heavyweight title fight in Marinette, WI. The show is presented by Skyler Thompson. Matlon, 34, defeated Hardy in 2021 by second round stoppage but both boxers have improved their boxing since that bout earlier on. The rematch bout is scheduled for six rounds of action.

“The first meeting was a bit strange, very unrefined” said Matlon.”I think he was getting used to the pro rule-set as it was his pro debut, and I was still getting used to the boxing rule-set as it was only my second boxing match (3rd if you count my one amateur bout in 2016). Coming in without much boxing experience, I was successful in making it more of a fight and less of a boxing match. I managed to get the upper hand in a bit of a messy scrap with some big punches that were able to land well and end the fight early. I expect this time to be much different than last time. Shortly after our first meeting I did start training boxing specifically under a boxing coach (Corey Rodriguez), so my game will be entirely different. I’m sure he has drastically changed for the better as well, sounds like he’s been on a tear since we met. It’s a fight I’m excited for and I expect it’ll be a good match. I still call the Striking Institute in Little Canada my home gym, but I’ve been doing a lot of supplementing to get the boxing exposure needed to prepare. I have been doing a lot of workouts at The Firehouse gym in Columbia Heights, as well as Wurk gym for sparring.”

Former Minnesota state super welterweight champion and now coach, Corey Rodriguez is happy with the work the two have put in to prepare and says Matlon is ready to put on a show.

“Tommy and I have been working together for 20 months. He is determined to improve his boxing abilities. This camp has been great. He is in superb shape. We have many sparring rounds in preparation for this rematch. Tommy has more sweet science knowledge and defensive skills than ever. He has learned many angles and defensive counter-punching skills. Tommy hits very hard with both hands. We are looking forward to the rematch. Tommy’s movement, defense and punching power should deem us victorious come November 11th. Thank you Dominicc Hardy for giving Tommy the rematch. I’m sure Dominicc has improved since they last fought, but so has Tommy. We are ready for war come November 11th”.
