FAILED WEIGHT CUT BY OPPONENT LEAVES MEDEL WITHOUT A FIGHT

Leo Medel capped off a hard training camp heading into what would have been his second professional fight last night in Iowa. The Apple Valley, MN resident trained at the CMB Boxing Gym and even traveled as far as North Dakota and Illinois to the Sam Colonna Boxing to prepare. Medel made the contracted weight of 165 pounds with a smile at the scales. Unfortunately, his opponent Thomas Haney was not as disciplined. Haney appeared to be in good shape but was announced as being 10 pounds over weight while being weighed in. The fight was cancelled and Medel was left looking forward to the next one. Extreme/Maximus boxing announced after the show that over 2000 fans had made the trip many of which were looking to see Medel in action. The 2 time upper midwest golden gloves champion Medel says it’s possible he gets on their next show on July 17th.

Leo Medel, left and Thomas Haney, right face off after weigh ins. The fight would not take place as Haney missed weight.

“It was disappointing that he didn’t make the weight. I worked hard for this one and even took two diet courses to make weight cutting easier for me which really helped” Medel told MinnesotaBoxing.com. “It was probably the easiest weight cut I’ve ever done in my whole boxing career. We’ve been training hard and traveled to different places like North Dakota and Chicago just to get ready. I was ready to give a good show and it was unfortunate. We might be looking at July 17th (Iowa) but we are not sure. I’ll keep working hard everyday and staying focused and maybe even drop more weight for the next one. I just want to thank everyone who supports me and pushes me to do better and to my team and family who are always there no matter what. Thank you to everyone who is a part of CMB Boxing Gym and who supports CMB. Thanks to you for always keeping up with boxing in Minnesota and staying up to date with me and other fighters. I appreciate it!”
