BOXING: SANDS, ZARZAR SHOWDOWN ADDED TO HINCKLEY CARD

“The Haitian Temptation” Al Sands (19-2, 17 KO’s) of Duluth, Mn and Mengistu “The Dynamic Warrior” Zarzar (6-0-1, 5 KO’s) of Brooklyn Park, MN have both signed on for a cruiserweight showdown Friday, August 25th at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, MN.

Sands had a good run last year, winning four fights in as many bouts. The former Minnesota State cruiserweight and WBA-NABA USA cruiserweight champion Sands saw two title fights fall through on him earlier this year in Russia and says that he is ready to let his fists fly against vocal rival Mengistu Zarzar.

“A big thank you to everyone that has supported me throughout my career. Let the good times roll! Everybody has to do what they can to sell tickets but I’m gonna keep it simple. Trash talk is a waste of energy so I’ll to let my fists do the talking on fight night.”

Mengistu Zarzar is still a newcomer to the fight scene, having turned pro just two years ago. But that hasn’t stopped him from challenging Minnesota’s other top fighters. Zarzar fought Mn State cruiserweight champion Phil Williams to a draw last January and is looking at the fight with Al Sands as an opportunity to leap up through the rankings.

“My thoughts are Phil ran from me all nite in my last fight. He threw less then 20 punches because he was so worried about my left hand. Al Sands is a good fighter, he’s rated 5th in the United States. But he doesn’t possess the lessons I’ve learned from the schools of hard knocks. He wouldn’t understand what I mean by this until the night after the fight. I am not like any opponent he ever faced! As a matter of fact, I advise Sands to not train for this fight. His only chance of winning this fight is eating lots of bones to strengthen his mouth because I am coming for that chin!”
