MMA: HERNANDEZ, PETERSEN RESULTS FROM MISSOURI

Lakeville, Minnesota’s Tommy Petersen improved his amateur heavyweight record to (now 4-0) last Saturday night at the Truman Memorial Building in Independence, Missouri. Peterson defeated Jordan Franks (now 6-16-1) of Iowa to become the KCFA interim title heavyweight champion.

Petersen and Franks tested the waters and fought cautiously for a minute before the action began to pick up according to Spartan Martial Art’s Dylan Murphy. Murphy continued, “Franks threw a few karate style hook kicks at Tommy. Tommy landed a couple of jabs I believe and Tommy had Franks backed up to the cage. There was a small exchange and Tommy landed a good uppercut. They clinched and exchanged a few knees. Tommy landed an over-under trip, got him to the ground and quickly went to full mount. He started getting his shots through more and more and the fight was eventually stopped at around 1:40 into the first round.”

26 year old Sam “The Mohawk Menace” Hernandez (now 2-1) of Sleepy Eye, MN was stopped in the second round in his fight against David Onama (now 3-0).

Hernandez did not let Onama’s 11-0 amateur credentials or undefeated pro record deter him from attacking in his usual aggressive style. Hernandez stood and traded with the skilled Onama in a good back and forth opening round. Onama was sharp and landed some heavy elbows on the ground before sinking in a rear naked choke to end the fight according to Hernandez’s brother Juan.
