The former MN state champion Hubbert of Minneapolis now lives in Duluth, MN and defeated Tony Lee in his last bout. Lee, who was making a comeback, went toe to toe with Hubbert with the latter earning a big win by 5th round stoppage in the fight. That was last March and Hubbert had big plans to capitalize on the victory. However, a second career achilles tear crushed those plans and left him sidelined.

Determined not to let the injury end his boxing career, Hubbert pushed through months of rehab and is ready to return to the ring.

“It’s been a long six months for me with the injury” said Hubbert. “I feel like this was the year of torn Achilles with Kirk Cousins just suffering the same and also Aaron Rogers but I put the work in and did physical therapy I had to change my style a little as far as using my feet to get out of trouble. Now I’m using more upper body and head movement. That style has always worked for me in the amateurs and I’m hoping I’ll have success with it. My fight camp was great , I got a good 6-8 weeks in and lots of rounds sparring. I feel great and confident I’ll do good.”

Hubberts opponent, 19 year old Isaiah Riquelmy is a former amateur standout and will have the hometown advantage but he believes that his much greater pro experience will work in his favor.

“He’s very green so I’m looking to use my experience. I hear he’s an aggressive south-paw but not much power and can’t fight going backwards.”

At 35 and almost 40 fights, Hubbert still feels like he has some good years left in the ring. He says finding all Minnesota match-ups has not been easy which is why most of his fights these days are on the road.

“Everyone knows they have been trying to match me and Nate Rubin. That would be a good local fight or Roman Cruz, Josh Clark or Marlin Sims. I don’t really care, I like to stay busy and I’m up for anything. It’s been hard to get a local fight because of my experience but they know how to reach me.”

“I just want to say thank you to the people who have supported me and continue to support me. I still have a couple of good ones left in me and I’m going out with a bang.”
