DETROIT LAKES, MN — On Saturday, May 17, the Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes will host Ignite Fights 108, an action-packed pro-am boxing event featuring a compelling regional matchup: Frazee, Minnesota’s own Corey Thompson (5-3) takes on North Dakota’s Bobby Deane (5-1) in a light heavyweight showdown.

This bout has a personal edge for Thompson, who will be fighting back in Detroit Lakes where he began training as a pro in 2012. Thompson has built a reputation as a gutsy and seasoned competitor. He’s faced three undefeated fighters in his last four fights — all of whom remain unbeaten — and has learned a great deal from the experience.

“I’ve learned a lot in the ring, especially going up against tough, undefeated opponents,” Thompson said. “Now it’s time to test everything I’ve learned against another formidable fighter. I feel better than ever and I still believe in myself.”

Thompson, a former Upper Midwest Golden Gloves Champion and amateur standout, has always been known for his grit, heavy hands, and boxing IQ. His return to Ignite Fights is also a reunion with longtime coach Chris Holt.

“It’s a pleasure to be working with Chris Holt again — he’s my forever coach,” Thompson added. “I’m also thankful to Coach Daleco James for helping elevate my game for this camp. I’m excited to fight for Ignite in an area I have strong ties to. Hopefully I’ll see some old friends and supporters and reconnect with a few people I haven’t seen in a while.”

Thompson is respectful of the challenge ahead, acknowledging Deane’s awkward southpaw style and strong record.

“He’s my age, my height, and he’s a tricky lefty with real skills,” Thompson said. “I respect him and I’m thankful for the opportunity to share the ring with him. Now it’s time to show up and show out.”

On the other side of the ring, Standing at 6’2”
Bobby Deane is making his Minnesota debut — and sees the bout as a personal test and a potential turning point to getting his career back on track.

“Boxing has always been something I felt I was good at — damn near great at,” said Deane. “But I lost focus for a bit. I want to get back to being that guy, especially around my hometown. That’s the next step for me.”

The New Town, North Dakota native is known for his power and aggression. He started his career 5-0 with four knockouts before dropping a hard-fought battle in round 5 of 6 to Suray Mahmutovic in 2022. Now, he’s eager to get back in the win column against a respected opponent.

“I heard Thompson’s a damn good fighter and no pushover — and that’s great. I like to think I’m the alpha, but some days you don’t feel like that!” Deane admitted. “That’s why you have to trust in your training and your effort. If I’ve been bullshitting myself, I guess fight night will tell. I’m very excited for this one.”
