BOXING: WEEKEND RESULTS, ABELL INJURED, HUBBERT STOPPED BY BODY SHOT

Injury Cuts Abell Bout Short

“Minnesota Ice” Joey Abell (35-11, 33 KO’s) tore his right bicep in round two on Saturday night resulting in a TKO loss to Michael Coffie (11-0, 8 KOs). The fight took place in California and was televised on Fox. Abell was on the attack and landing nice combinations when a looping right hand landed awkwardly to the shoulder of Coffie. Abell immediately grimaced, dropped his hands and was on his way down after the injury occurred. Coffie wasted no time in taking advantage of the situation and landed the first good punch of the fight, a left to Abell’s body as the Minnesotan was going down. Coffie then landed a glancing uppercut as Abell hit the canvas. Unfazed by the punches, Abell grabbed his arm and signaled to the referee he could not continue at 0:45 of round two.

The first round was close but Abell pressed the action. “Minnesota Ice” was getting the best of Coffie in the second round before the injury and appeared to be confusing his bigger opponent with angles combinations, pressure and boxing on his toes. Abell confirmed afterwards to Minnesotaboxing.com that the bicep was torn and that he will require surgery to fix it. He says the fight was going as planned and does not expect Coffie or his team to take a rematch in the future.

HUBBERT STOPPED IN ROUND 1 BY BODY SHOT

Super lightweight Clarence Booth moved to 18-4, 10 KOs after a first round KO over Rondale Hubbert (13-15-2, 8 KO’s) was stopped by a body shot delivered by Clarence Booth (18-4, 10 KO’s) on Friday night in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Hubbert was boxing well with his hands low with a bobbing/weaving style. Booth attacked and found a home with a hard body shot that dropped the Minnesotan at 2:59 of the opening round.

Hubbert was understandably upset with the result. “I trained, was in shape, and ready to fight. Just got caught with a perfect shot” said Hubbert afterwards.
