ABELL PLANS TO PUT OUT NOFIRE TOMORROW NIGHT

“Minnesota Ice” Joey Abell (31-9, 29 KO’s) will box in one of the featured televised bouts this Tuesday night on Fox Sports 1 at the Black Bear Casino in Carlton, MN. The Minnesotan Abell will battle undefeated Oklahoma native John Wesley Nofire (18-0, 15 KO’s) in a 10 round heavyweight bout. Abell, who turned 35 today, will put off his birthday celebrations until tomorrow when he says he believes he will also be celebrating win number 32.
Abell heads into the match up with some key advantages that he will be looking to use and capitalize on. The most obvious of those being his big advantage in experience and quality of opposition. Abell has traveled the world and competed against some of the best in the sport. In 2014, Abell traded punches with Tyson Fury who is now the WBA Super/IBF/WBO/IBO Heavyweight champion of the world. Nofire is regarded as a prospect, but Abell says he does not know a whole lot about him. And at the age of 30, Nofire will be facing his toughest test in Abell.
“I don’t know much about the guy due to the lack of tape and publicity” said Abell.  I do know that he hasn’t fought many known fighters and that he and his team are planning on using me as a step up fight. I respect them for allowing me the time to prepare. I know he has a lot of learning to do as I was once in his shoes. He’s a busy type of fighter who’s long and uses his reach well. It will be my job to get past his reach and land some power which I fully intend to do. Losing can be a valuable lesson and I’m going to be the teacher in this one.”

Abell appears to be in the best shape of his life, having had a full training camp as opposed to many of his recent high caliber fights in which he took on short notice. Abell told Minnesotaboxing.com that training went well and that he was able to push himself like never before. His main focus was on conditioning. Prior to signing on to fight Nofire, Abell spent time in WBA heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz’s camp and then went directly to London, England to work with undefeated heavyweight Anthony Joshua.
“The camp with Luis went great. I was slightly out of shape but it came back fast and I was able to learn some great lessons. Working with world class guys humbles me and makes me aware of the sacrifice fighters need to make to be fighters.”
” I’m taking this fight to show myself where I’m at” said Abell. ” I’m 35 and not getting any younger. I don’t want to be a stepping stone for anyone so I’m figuring out if my inner drive is enough for where I want to be in the fight game. If not I have no problem getting out. But I feel great and plan on having my hand raised on Tuesday night.”
