Minnesota has three boxers remaining heading into today’s bouts. Local boxers will only be competing in the noon session (11 am CST). Thanks to Jeremy Umland for helping us keep up with all the action!

Guinevere Lee of Burnsville, MN lost a hard-fought split decision to Isabella Rivera of Chicago, IL in a Intermediate female 114 lbs. bout.

Isaiah Abalan of Minneapolis, MN won an exciting split decision over Andrew Oneill of Pineville, SC in a Elite male, 156 lbs. bout.

Isayah Smith of Duluth, MN lost a razor thin decision to Devante Tuggle Fredericksburg, VA in a Elite male, 132 lbs. bout

Asiya Mohamed of St. Paul, MN lost a well fought decision to Paige Gilbert Casper, WY in a Elite female, 119 lbs. bout.

Minnesota has two champions so far, Jonas Ruiz from St. Cloud Golden Gloves national champion Lavender Nelson from Lucy laney boxing national champion.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 2022

Ring 2, Bout 8, 11 am CST session

Z’karion Walker of Minneapolis, MN defeated Jair Flores Martinez of Mukwonago, WI, in a Bantam male, 85 pound bout. Walker will now box in the championship bout next.

Ring 2, Bout 7, 5 pm CST session

Isaiah Abalan of Minneapolis, MN won by walk over after Joshua Jenkins of Mesquite, TX, missed weight in an Elite male, 156 lbs. bout. Abalan was not happy with not being able to box for the win but will be back in action Thursday.

TUESDAY, APRIL 26, 2022

Ring 4, Bout 14, Noon session

Lavendar Nelson of MN defeated Evelyn Portugal of CA,in a Bantam female, 110 lbs. bout to win the divisions National qualifier championship.

Ring 3, Bout 2, 6 PM session

Isayah Smith of Duluth, MN wins by decision over Zaro Snyder of Saint Paul, MN

Isayah Smith of Duluth, MN won a split decision over Zaro Snyder of Saint Paul, MN in a 132 pound Elite Male bout moments ago in Cleveland, Ohio. It was a close and exciting bout between the two Minnesota boxers.
Round 1. Smith taller Snyder landing combinations down the middle of Smith’s guard early. Smith answering with straight right hands out of the orthodox stance. Smith landed some nice head shots particularly in the closing seconds but it was Snyder’s round 3-2 (all 10-9) on the judges scorecards.


Round 2. Smith got his jab going to begin round two while Snyder pressed forward. Smith landed a nice left hook along the ropes about a minute in that scored. Snyder was the first of the two to go to the body midway through the round. The two Minnesotans traded big punches to close the round. The judges scored in favor of Smith 3-2 (all 10-9).


Round 3. Smith landed a nice left right that scored as round three got off to another heated start by both boxers. The action was momentarily halted to stop bleeding from Snyder’s nose. Snyder began sticking his long jab that he’s become known for. The bout as again stopped due to the bleeding from Snyder’s nose. The referee indicated that the bleeding was caused by a punch. Both boxers stormed out of their corners after action resumed again. Snyder landed a good straight right before the match was stopped a third time for bleeding from the nose of Snyder. The bout ended shortly after with both boxers looking confident after a close exciting bout. The judges score the third 4-1 (all 10-9) for Isayah Smith of Twin Ports Boxing who earned the hard fought victory.

Some of Minnesota’s top amateur boxers have arrived in Cleveland, Ohio for USA boxing’s National qualifier tournament which takes place from Monday, April 25th to Saturday, April 30th at the Wolstein Center. Over 1000 boxers from around the nation will get together to compete for a spot at the 2022 USA Boxing National Championships which take place later this year. In addition to the elite level boxers, USA Boxing’s National Qualifier will feature competitors in the pee wee and youth divisions.

Minnesota boxing coaches that have brought boxers include Jamal “Shango” James of the Circle of Discipline. Charlie Schumacher, Jesse Ruiz, Donnie Penlton, and Jon Laplant of St. Cloud Golden Gloves. Morgan McDonald of Lucy Laney Boxing and Frank Fetrow of Minneapolis Boxing. Shane Chanslor of Element Boxing. Minnesota will also have three officials working throughout the week, Lissette Nelson, Angela Johnson and Brian Cosgrove.

St. Cloud Golden Gloves boxers competing in this years National qualifier are Daveone Olive, (165 lbs. Elite), Cedric Filiyaro, (156 lbs. Elite), JJ Ruiz (125 lbs. Youth), Jonas Ruiz, (90 lbs. Pee Wee).

Lucey Laney boxers include Morgan McDonald Jr. (Intermediate male 114 lbs.), Z’Karion Walker (Bantam, male, 80 lbs.), Lavender Nelson (Bantam, female, 110, 114 lbs.). Ronald Lee had planned to compete at bantam, 119 lbs. but was needed back home with family.

Competing out of the Circle of Discipline will be Isaiah Abalan, Elite, male, 156 lbs.).

Minneapolis Boxing will feature Zaro Snyder (Elite, male, 132 lbs.) and Guinevere Lee (Intermediate, female, 114 lbs).

Representing Twin Ports Boxing is Isayah Smith of Duluth, MN (Elite, male, 132 lbs.).

Asiya Mohamed of Element Boxing in Saint Paul is also bracketed and will represent Minnesota as well (Elite, female, 119 lbs.).
