WIUFF DECISIONS KASZOWSKI

Heavyweight Travis Wiuff (41-9) of Owatonna recently competed in the International Fight League, a new MMA organization which features a team format. Wiuff fought for the Razorclaws, who are coached by Frank Shamrock, and won a unanimous decision against Wojtek Kaszowski of the Pitbulls team. The Pitbulls are led by MMA legend Renzo Gracie. The event was held on September 23 in Quad Cities, Illinois. The IFL event will debut on Fox Sports Net on November 12


MN-MMA UPDATE

St. Paul native Jeff Monson (22-5) will challenge UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia for the title on November 18 at UFC 65. Monson, who earned a Master's Degree in Psychology from UMD, currently trains in Olympia, Washington with American Top Team. Monson has won 16 fights in a row and has not lost since a June 2002 decision to Forrest Griffin.

On October 14, 2006 MMA veteran Sean Sherk (31-2-1) became the UFC Lightweight Champion when he defeated Kenny Florian by a unanimous decision at UFC 64. Sherk, who trains out of Minnesota Martial Arts Academy in Brooklyn Center, defeated The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 veteran Florian despite suffering a huge cut on the side of his head early in the second round. Sherk's only career defeats were to UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes at UFC 42 and #1 welterweight contender Georges St. Pierre at UFC 56. St. Pierre will challenge Hughes for the welterweight title at UFC 65 on November 18, 2006 in Las Vegas.

Nick Thompson, of Eagan, recently defeated Davion Peterson by a 3rd Round submission at the Bodog Fight event in Costa Rica. With the victory, Thompson (29-9-1) advances to face the Russian Red Devils team in the Bodog Fight USA vs. Russia pay-per-view event on December 2, 2006.
