Duluth
native and Minnesota Light Heavyweight Champion Zach "Jungle Boy" Walters
(9-1, 8 KO's) is scheduled to travel to Vero Beach, Florida on November 22
to participate
in the training camp of world champion Antonio "Magic Man"
Tarver (22-2, 18 KO's).
Walters will train and spar with Tarver in preparation
for his upcoming showdown with
Glencoffe Johnson (41-9-2, 28 KO's) on December
18th on HBO. The fight takes place
at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It
will be Tarver's first fight since his stunning second
round knockout of the
legendary Roy Jones Jr. on May 15th of this year.
Walters will attend the
training camp through December 10th, and should gain valuable
experience working
with Tarver and his legendary trainer Buddy McGirt Jr. In having a busy
year
with seven fights, Walters has quickly established himself as one of the top pro
boxers
in Minnesota.
"I have to say that I am totally blown away
by the opportunity," said Walters. "Sharky
(trainer Chuck Horton)
and I were talking about how we didn't want to outgrow my record,
like some
boxers do when they accumulate a lot of fights in a short while. We always want
to
keep one step ahead of the competition so we can ensure a good outcome when I
fight.
Then this training camp comes along!"
As for the experience,
Walters explained, "It is going to be a huge asset in my preparations
for
the upcoming year. Being able to spar with the best in my weight division is a
good
opportunity to see what the top fighters in the world do to prepare for
a championship fight.
These are things I need to know, since I too want to
win a world title some day. I will be able
to scale myself against the best.
I can see what I need to work on in my training, what works
and what to throw
out."
Tarver is a southpaw fighter, somewhat rare, and working with
one of the best in the world is
not lost on Walters. "It's going to be
the best chance to learn more about southpaw boxers,"
he explained. "As
most people know, my only loss is to a southpaw boxer. I do plan on fighting
Robert
Linton again so this will give me an edge when I do it. We see the next year as
another
level of my career. This training camp will help our preparations in
making it a successful transition."
Chuck "Sharky" Horton
is extremely pleased about the opportunity that his fighter has been
given.
"This is a great opportunity for the 'Jungle Boy,' to be sparring with a
world champion
such as Antonio Tarver," explained Horton. "There
was a television station (WDIO) here in
Duluth that did a story the other night.
There was so much response from the fans that I had
to shut my phone off."
