Walters Responds to Bonsante

July 18th, 2008
By Jesse Kelley

What started as rumors of a showdown between Zach Walters and Anthony Bonsante has quickly turned into slinging of not so kind words in recent interviews about each other.
One thing is certain, if "The Bullet" and "Jungle Boy" do meet in the future, It would have to be a barn burner for however long it would last going by the way each guys speaks of the other.

Here is a quick recap of events leading up to this point:
Zach Walters discussed the idea of facing Bonsante after his victory over Aaron Norwood in Superior, WI. Bonsante had already caught wind of the challenge and fired back at Walters in an interview following his win he had that same week against Teddy Muller in Hinckley, MN. Now, Walters wanted the opportunity to respond to what he felt were shots at him and members of his team by Bonsante. Below is what Walters had to say...

Walters: First off, I am taken back by Bonsante’s lack of respect. In his response he did his best to put dirt in my face. I proposed the idea of a fight because I have been approached by several fight fans on the idea of a fight between us. We are in the fight business and approached the interview in a professional manner. After he boxed Muller I figured it was a good opportunity to throw the idea out.

His response to my interview was that of a coward. As a coward he chose to trash talk me, my team, and my good friend Andy ”KAOS” Kolle. Typical bully type mentality. I have dealt with bullies before and he fits the mold. They talk big, but deep down they are scared. Why would he attack my team? We have done good things for boxing in our state. He tried to bypass the topic of our fight by proposing Phil Williams as a match for me. Then he continues to bring up KAOS as the fight for him. I’m the one looking for a fight! As for Phil, I told Phil I’d fight him when dollars made sense. That was about a year ago. Ask him, he’ll tell you. Phil is a professional and understands the business. He doesn’t hide behind trash talk. He did a great job in his last fight and if you can find me a promoter to make a fight between us happen, it’s on. Till then, we’ll have to wait. I’ve been watching him and if the match pulls off some day I’ll know what to do. Cheers on that topic.

I have lost respect for Bonsante I’ll just call him tony from now on. I know he tries to get himself all riled up for fights. He makes his bouts a personal vendetta motivate him. If that’s what he needs to get himself hyped up enough to step in the ring with. It’s all good. I hope I get his blood boiling with this response. If I fight tony I want him to be on his A-game. No less. Anything less may leave him damaged for life. He made this fight personal to me. He tried to throw dirt in my face first. My first interview was professional, now I’m going have some fun and run my mouth a bit.

Let’s see…where to begin. Does the name Danny Thomas ring a bell? Probably not to some readers so let me remind. Thomas was a boxer with a record of 14-35-1. He was a hand picked opponent and Tony got knocked out. In my opinion, Tony blew it! It was supposed to be a showcase fight for him and he got whooped. So why is he trying to put me down for the loss to Pineda. Pineda was 38-3-1, a 2x world championship challenger, and had plenty of time to prepare for our fight. I didn’t get past him, but I learned allot in the process. We also know Tony got knocked silly on ‘The Contender’ series and then embarrassed by Allen Green on ESPN 2. In that bout he got punked before the fight even began. As soon as he got hit by a hook he mentally fell apart. Bullies fall apart when they realize their opposition doesn’t fear them. Tony was out of his element when he realized Green viewed him as just another notch in his belt. Anyway, Tony’s first TKO loss compared to mine is no comparison. He talked about me getting stopped as if it never happened to him before. He must have amnesia. He called me a tomato can. That’s over the top! I should call him Tony“The Blank”. All he has in his arsenal is a good jab, the ring name “Bullet” just doesn’t fit. We have amateurs in our gym under three fights that have great jabs. Maybe Tony“BB gun”, or Tony“pellet gun” could work. I’m not in charge of his promotions, but maybe we can have Tony talk to Mr. Bonsante in third person while looking in the mirror and the two of them can hash it out. Tony speaks as if he is a promoter with television hookups. This guy is so grandiose I don’t think he can see through his own BS. Talking about himself in the third person, what a goof. It makes him sound ridiculous.

Let’s talk about fan support. Take our last shows. Where were the crowds of people salivating at the idea of Tony fighting then? I know! They were driving past his show on the way to Duluth for my fight. It’s funny he thinks the Target Center was filled with personal fans of his when he boxed Vanda. Those that know the boxing game in MN know that is delusional. The huge crowd was thanks to Tommy Brunette doing a great job marketing Vanda during their time together. Nothing else. Tony probably thinks that Madison Square Garden was filled with fans that wanted to see him beat Duddy last St. Patty’s Day. Nope, delusional again!

Maybe I shouldn’t fight Tony lest he lose his mind any further. He doesn’t give me credit for having ‘pop’, but he’ll find out. After he takes my punches he’ll know what’ up. What is he thinking taking that fight in Canada anyway? We have business to settle right here in state first. I thought I approached him first. Instead of doing business with me he chose to hide behind trash talking. Poor choice if you ask me. Right now I am a bit worried for him. Maybe I can help Tony prepare for his next fight by bringing him a pillow, an ice pack, and some Tylenol. He’s getting KOed like he always does on TV so he will need it. Hey, if he fights me I might carry him the distance so he can finish his career on his feet. You know, do him a favor.

He is going off to risk his record on the road. I hope he wins so he doesn’t come back as damaged goods. In fact, I can’t remember a fight he won on TV other than his shady mugging of Cooper on The Contender. Tony took him because he was unprepared and a lesser opponent. It was a sure way to get passed the first round of the show. No fault to him. After all, Tony was just being true to his bully nature. It was like punching a dude in the back of the head after he walks away from a confrontation. What a bully.

I’m not going to give him the credit he wanted for his fight with Teddy Muller. Muller is ripped every time he boxes. That’s how Teddy rolls. Big surprise he ‘came in ripped’ when they faced off last month. Why did Tony bring that up anyway? It took Peter Manfredo Jr. nine rounds to stop Muller. Are we trying to say Bonsante is better than Manfredo Jr.? I hope not, Tony got shut out for an easy win by Peter back in ’04. His comment about Muller looking better against him than me, that’s funny too. Muller was also a late filler for the show and given a fair shot, like my team gave, he would destroy Bonsante Muller had two months to train for me and had just gone the distance with Allen Green, something Tony couldn’t do by the way. For Tony, Muller had short notice and had suffered several beatings in the ring before coming back to MN. So, according to Tony, short notice and several losses in a row are what it takes to make a tougher fight. Common sense should make my point.

It’s not like me to get carried away like this these days. I put my crazy old self in a box several years ago. But the way I feel right now Tony had better come with an apology next time I see him, or we may have to get this thing going with out a ring. Forget the money; let’s settle it on the spot. That’s how I feel. Minnesota knows for the good guy I am now, but don’t misinterpret my niceness for weakness.

To Tony, I know you read my response, but this is for you… Go back to your mirror and ask yourself. “How do I want to be remembered?” Can you back up your words about beating me, or are you a coward hiding behind trash talk? I saw you fight back in ’02 before I turned pro and thought I could beat you then. I’ve watched you several times since then and still feel the same. Let’s find out who's right.
