Power-punching heavyweight Raphael Butler (33-6, 26 KO's) delivered
what his hometown fans have come to expect Saturday night as he
battered Travis Fulton (14-22, 14 KO's), stopping him in round number
two. I was not able to make it to the fights because of a close
friends wedding but our friend Deb O'Connor was at the fights to
recap for the MinnesotaBoxing.com readers. O'Connor stated that
Butler put Fulton on his seat in the first and second round before
finally earning the tko win. The official time of the stoppage was
2:04.
In other action, Mike Howell (1-1, 1 KO) overcame an early deficit
to score a tide turning knockout of Rayvon Wilson (0-3-1) in the
opening round.
6'5 Russian bomber Yevgeniy Shishporenok (5-0, 5 KO's) dispatched
Wisconsin's Hyacinthus Turnipseed (0-4) with ease in the opening
round. Turnipseed was a late replacement for Harold Johnson.
Malcolm Cowans, who is rumored to be training out of the Uppercut
gym, had a successful pro debut as he topped 44 year old Bobby Butters
(14-33-1, 6 KO's) in a bizarre bout.
Action was slow for the first two rounds according to O'Connor but
things picked up in the third. Butters, who was a familiar face
in the Saint Paul area throughout the 90's was deducted a point
for continuously refusing to listen to the referee's instructions.
Butters showed his growing frustration as he continued to fight
while being given a standing eight count following a Cowans knockdown.
Cowans would go on to win by Disqualification. Butters last fought
in 2001.
Ronnie Peterson Jr. (1-0, 1 KO) stopped Bobby Conners (0-9) by
fourth round TKO. Conners is known for his excessive holding and
unwillingness to fight in his bouts around the Midwest so it is
no surprise that the action was slow to begin with. Peterson began
to open up according to Deb O'Connor in the later rounds leading
to the stoppage. Conners may be remembered when he lost to Jorge
Teron on the undercard to Vanda-Campas in Minneapolis in 2005.
