From Mounds View
A night of public workouts was held on Saturday night in Mounds View,
MN. Promoter's Seconds Out stated that due to problems securing a doctor,
last second exhibition bouts were put together. Despite the changes making
the bouts unofficial, most of the matches turned out to be pretty heated
while others were just plain hard to put into words! Being that
the bouts were exhibitions involving headgear and some size differences,
I don't think I will sway one way or the other in this write up to suggest
a winner, which goes along with the fact that there were no judges ringside.
In a match that just as easily could have been called fight of the night, Jeremy McLaurin mixed it up with Ronnie Peterson Jr. McLaurin was relentless with pressure while Peterson looked to counter with speedy combinations. As the match came to a close, McLaurin let loose with head shots and Peterson purposely dropped his hands to block the shots with his head. Both men hugged and posed for the camera following the entertaining scrap.
Jon Schmidt and Charles Meier took turns landing thudding shots that rocked each others headgear from side to side. Both men train out of the same gym in Anoka but you never would have guessed it until after the bout.
Caleb Truax and Marvin Rodriquez boxed a more tactical match then the nights other bouts. Truax was supposed to be opposite Mohammed Kayongo but for reason's unknown to me, Kayongo didn't make it to the show. Rodriquez was a last second replacement to a last second replacement bout!
Promotor Tony Grygelko sort of made a comeback against ACR trainer Tom Halstad. I say sort of because the two went to war wearing what looked like 150 oz gloves. Each man was credited with a knockdown in the bout.
In the final "fight" of the evening, Joey Abell and cut man Jim Maurine kicked, punched and sat on each other in giant sumo wresting suits. Joey Abell scored with a flying back kick early but Maurine used his monstrous strength advantage to score more take downs. Abell capped the match off by sitting on Maurine's face.
The night kicked off with ACR amateur David Colon and an amateur teammate of his (my apologies for missing the young fighters name).
