The main event between
Willshaun Boxley (5-1) and William Hernandez (2-0) was cut short after
a down pour drenched the fighters and fans at the outdoor fight card earlier
tonight in Ramsey, MN. It was unfortunate timing because ringsiders got
the feeling a brawl was about to break out between the two confident fighters.
The opening round saw both men box cautiously but open up just enough
to feel the other man's punches. Boxley fired deceptive bombs that found
their target despite the slippery canvas. Hernandez stood his ground and
returned punches of his own. The rain seemed to start as the opening bell
sounded and steadily got worse as the first round came to a close. Referee
Mark Nelson had no choice but to stop the fight prematurely as rain pounded
the ring and sent the crowd running for cover. Nelson explained afterwards
that had the fight went four rounds it could have gone to the scorecards.
With only one round in the books official resuts is a no decision. After
the bout, Boxley stated that he felt he hurt Hernandez with a body shot
and was gearing to come out for round two with full intent to take Hernandez
out.
"I caught him with a good body shot and I could tell he didn't like
it" said Boxley. " He is lucky the rain came because I was going
to take him out in round two. I have never felt as loose and ready to
fight as I did tonight."
Hernandez on the other hand felt that the first round went exactly as
he had planned and stated himself that he was going to try to stop Boxley
in the next round.
"We felt each other out in the first round but I felt his power and
I wasn't impressed. I was planning to go after him in the second round
to get him out of there. "
Both fighters said that they want a rematch.
Robert "The Doctor" Kamya (17-10) won a six round split decision
over Joshua Rodriquez (4-10) just minutes before the rain arrived. The
first two rounds saw both fighters land solid punches while brawling at
times. Kamya switched things up however by the end of round three by moving,
ducking and counter punching Rodriquez rather then trade with the Iowa
fighter. Rodriquez, a brawler by heart, seemed confused at times as his
punch output dropped while Kamya continued to box and move. Describing
Rodriquez as tough may sound like a broken record but Rodriquez once again
showed a granite chin and heart as he never stopped trying to take the
fight to Kamya. Judges had it 59-57 For Rodriquez and 59-56 twice for
Kamya.
Marvin Rodriquez (2-2), a Minnesota transplant from Mexico, stopped Lake
City's Ryan Stock (0-2) at :58 of the opening round in a super middleweight
bout. Stock came out aggressively landing a hard left-rights to the head
of Rodriquez. Rodriquez stayed composed and seemed unfazed, as he hammered
left and right hands of his own to the body of Stock along the ropes,
sending Stock slumping to a corner where Nelson stopped the fight.
Dan Copp (1-1) won a unanimous decision over Derek Abrams (0-1) in the
nights opener. The two MMA fighters did a good job of boxing in the early
going despite their limited background in the sport. However, things slowed
during the final two rounds as both men's gas tanks were nearing empty.
Copp's conditioning seemed slightly better which was the difference maker
in the fight. Scores read 40-36, 40-36, 39-37.
