Sargent edges Araveno!

May 25, 2003

Professional boxing returned to the Shooting Star Casino Saturday night in Mahnomen, Minnesota. In the main event, heavyweight John Sargent (25-2 16 KOs) of Naytahwaush, MN defeated Marcelo Araveno (6-20 3 KOs) of Winnipeg, MB by split decsion. Araveno was a late replacement for former cruiserweight champion Orlin Norris. Word was Norris was unable to make the fight due to illness, although there was also a contract issue with a west cost promoter.

Sargent and Araveno previously met last February 22 with Sargent taking a unanimous decision. This bout was originally scheduled for six rounds, but was changed to a four rounder because Sargent was reportedly sick with food poisoning.

Both fighters fought evenly in the first round, trading hard shots to the body. Araveno put together some nice combinations early in the second and Sargent caught Araveno with a hard right hand to the ribs just before the bell sounded to end the round.

Araveno came out strong in the fourth round, landing some good shots to the head. Neither man showed much movement, instead electing to stand face to face, throwing combinations . In the end the judges scored it 39-37, 39-38 for Sargent and 39-37 for Araveno.

In what was probably the most entertaining bout of the night, Dave Peterson of Moundsview, MN looked impressive in stopping Terry Jesper (16-31) of Winnipeg, MB. Peterson controlled the first two rounds landing some nice shots to the head. Jesper didn't offer much offense in return, but he absorbed some hard shots, staying on his feet until the bell. Midway through the third Peterson pinned Jesper into the corner and unloaded, causing referee Mike Robinson to stop the fight.

Leo Moreno (5-0, 5KOs) of St. Paul, MN used a good body attack in stopping Randy Bileski (0-3) of Winnipeg, MB. Bileski was dropped twice in round two, both from body shots. The fight was stopped at 2:37 of the second round.

Chris Holt (3-1 2 KOs) of Detroit Lakes, MN was too much for Billy Tibbs (5-10) of Canada. Holt put Tibbs down three times, each from a hard right hand to the head. Referee Mike Robinson was forced to stop the contest after the third knockdown.

Donnie Davis (5-10) of Kansas City, KS stopped local fighter John Diver (0-2) at 1:48 of the third round. Both fighters got off the canvas once in the first round. Davis took over in the third round, knocking Diver down three times bringing the fight to an end.

Wayne Quinn of Naytahwaush, MN took a unanimous decision over Jeff Tibbets of Mahnomen, MN. It was both fighters pro debut. The scores were 40-36, 39-37, 39-37 for Quinn.

Mohamed Kayongo of Africa was supposed to take on Tytus Winn of Kansas City, KS but the fight was scratched because of a weight issue with Winn.
