FRWEEKEND WRAP UP - APRIL 12, 2010

It was another busy weekend for Minnesota fighters, a few pro's and many more amateur's. North Dakota's Mike Davis (5-7) won a 6 round split decision over Justin Danforth (6-15) in Green Bay, WI last Friday the 9th of April. On the same card, Bloomington's David LaQue (2-3-1) scored a 3rd round TKO Duluth's Danny Schlienz (7-19-1) in a bout put together relatively short notice.
On Saturday, Wilson Rivera (3-4) was stopped by Vegas native Anthony Lenk (7-1) in the third round at the Hard Rock Hotel in Nevada.
And of course the 2010 Upper Midwest Golden Gloves Tournament took place at the Shooting Star Casino in Walker, MN.
Minnesotaboxing.com caught up with Mike Davis and Wilson Rivera to get their thoughts on the fights and Golden Gloves results and video are also posted courtesy of Livefromringside.com, Terry Marsh, and Cathy Steward.

WILSON RIVERA RECAPS HIS BOUT:
Everything I told you going into the fight was true. I had the best training camp of my life and got great work from one of the top fighters in the state Michael Faulk. But during the last day of our sparring I messed up my arm real bad in sparring. I really wanted to tell everyone before hand but my team and I decided it was best not to talk about it. It's a small world and that is something you don't want your opponent to find out. I couldn't cancel the fight with such short notice so I decided to take a chance and fight. The guy figured out in the first round that I couldn't throw my jab. I tried but could not throw it. In the second round, we exchanged, and the same thing happened. The ref told me that I needed to throw more punches or he was going to stop the fight so I did the best I could do. I was hit in the neck in the third round and went down. That is when the ref stopped the fight. God knows I trained hard for this fight. I am the kind of fighter that is always going forward. I never back down but if you watched the fight on television you could see I couldn't go forward. To land the right hand you need to jab and I just couldn't do it. Right now my arm is swollen and in pain but I hope to be back soon.

MIKE DAVIS RECAPS HIS BOUT:
I want to give credit to Justin. He is a tough guy. First I would like to thank my cornermen for the great advice during the fight. John Hoffman, JJ Corn and Andrew Kato. I knew the speed factor was in my favor so I used my jab alot knowing that it would be a key punch with both of us being southpaws and I think that opened everything else up. A hard incidental or accidental headbutt broke my nose in the third which is a round I believe I lost along with the fourth because of a lost point due to retaliation of a sucker punch after the bell. He punched me first after the bell but I knew a point would be taken and was willing to work twice as hard in the 5th and 6th to get it back and it worked. I got out with the split decision in his hometown. But I also learned that I have A LOT of room for improvement so I will be working on that going into my next fights to come.
