Williams Confident Despite Recent Changes
"My coach moved on. He called and told me he didn't think he could take me any further then he has taken me. I agreed, and we went our separate ways. " Codrington "officially" falling out happened only days after I sat down the Williams, where we discussed his fight with New Yorker Reggie "Concrete" LeCrete crumbling for the second time in what would have been at the Target center on April 18th. "Me and this Reggie "Concrete" LeCrete. I never really heard too much about him but Chuck Horton brought him up to me before. I was supposed to fight him in Hinckley a while back. That fight didn't come through though, Reggie pulled out. Actually the whole card ended up getting canceled. So now I signed the contract again to fight him on April 18th at the Target Center. They told me during my last week of training that he broke his jaw. So I wanted to see the medical records because it's the second time he did that. Then I came to find out that he had pulled out because of a broken tooth!" So now a new and still recognizable opponent is lined
up to face Williams, "Kid Dynamite" Antwun Echols. At 37,
Echols has seen his best days. The question is, how much of his skillset
does he still possess? Despite recent losses, Echols has shown that
he can compete with fringe contenders which should make for a good test
to see where Williams stands. Echols said he is coming to knock Williams
out. Although MinnesotaBoxing.com was not able to get "The Drills" thoughts on his new opponent Echols, the fact he talked about wanting to face some of the worlds top names shows that Williams will be confident of victory when he steps through the ropes tomorrow night. "I have been asked about fighting Jermain Taylor. Yeah I would take that fight. Even Roy Jones. Jones is one I really want. I would love to get Roy, I think that would be a good one for me." Said the now self managed fighter.
An unofficial fight between Williams and rival Zach Walters is also said to be in the works for later this year. Williams has been calling for a fight with Walters and Walters is just as eager to get Williams in the ring. Walters recently fire back at Williams's challenges and the fight seems all but set if it comes down to both men taking the fight. "Jungle Boy... I am going to crush Jungle Boy. I hope he knows that. He is a cool dude, we always talk but I am going to crush him. I like what they are doing in Duluth. I like Chuck Horton. They have a middleweight champion and a lightheavyweight champion, state titles or what not but they are making it happen up there. You have to respect what they are doing up there, the business aspect of it. I fought up there a couple of times. But the best have to fight the best and I feel like I am the best. They are calling Walters the best but I don't believe he is at all. People say I haven't fought anybody but who has he fought? The only times he fought anybody, he got knocked out. To me, that doesn't put him on another level. He is just a record builder. We won't even need judges. The promoters can save their money for judges because it won't go ten rounds, he knows that. If he puts any kind of pressure on me, he's going to run into some blows. " Recently, Walters announced plans to move to super middleweight. I asked Williams if 168 would in any way effect the chances of the fight taking place. Williams said it wouldn't but also added some news that will surely get people talking. "I am a natural super middleweight. Now that I am training right and not taking short notice fights, I can fight at super middleweight. My first fight was at 168 even though my opponent was 175. That is where I should be at. But I will fight anybody in Minnesota. These guys 160 and above can't hide from the truth. The truth is, I have an open contract for anybody in Minnesota at 160 pounds or above. I started 09' right and I am going to end it right"
