Ronnie Peterson Jr Fight Recap
By Jesse Kelley
November 11th, 2008
Coon Rapids, Minnesota's Ronnie Peterson (1-0, 1 KO) made
his professional debut on October 4th in Rochester, MN. Peterson outboxed
and stopped Allante Davis of Wisconsin in round number four of a super
featherweight contest. MinnesotaBoxing.com was not able to make the trip
to Rochester so decided to talk with some of the fighters who boxed that
night to get a recap of what took place. Peterson discusses the fight
with Davis and also talks about fights he is looking for down the road
in this first of three interviews which will also include heavyweights
"Boris" Shisporenok and Raphael Butler.
Can you run us through your fight with Bobby Connors...
Actually the guy I fought was Allante Davis. Everybody keeps saying Bobby
Connors but it was Allante Davis. He was a southpaw
which I didn't know going in. I reinjured my arm early also in the fight.
I think it was the first or second right hand that I threw. I looked over
at my dad right when it happened and just shook my head. I kept using
it though in the fight because once that adrenaline gets going you really
don't feel it. It felt a little awkward though during the fight and it
hurt like a bitch afterwards! He wasn't a real difficult opponent though.
He ran a lot. The first round, he came at me a little but that was about
it. He ran alot after that. I dropped him towards the end of the second
round. I kept hurting him in the corner but just couldn't take him out
with one hand. Finally in the fourth, I got him with some nice punches
and the ref stopped it.
Your pro debut was at 130. What weight do you plan on
fighting at as a pro?
I am just going to go with the flow. I want to say I can fight at anywhere
from 112 to 135. I really don't know. I have a couple of tall brothers
so I really don't know how much taller I am going to get. For now I will
be fighting between 120-130. 130 is pushing it right now. I could definitely
feel the difference at 130. The guy I fought hit pretty hard. I promised
myself I wouldn't get dropped though! I spar with my brother (Dave Peterson)
all the time and a lot of heavier guys. I sparred with the other guy that
made his pro debut on that show (Malcolm Cowans) who fought at 192. So
basically I get most of my sparring from bigger guys. I feel like I have
a pretty good chin.
Minnesota is not exactly known for smaller weight fighters
but are there any fighters you would like to face? Also what is next for
you?
There are a few fights that would be fun. I would like to fight Brad (Patraw).
There was talk about us fighting even before he turned pro. I had mentioned
that it would be a good fight and he took it the wrong way. I am not one
to be cocky or whatever but I was always raised not to back down from
anybody. If somebody pushes you then you push back. He said a lot of bad
stuff about me and ever since then I just got a negative vibe from him.
After the Upper Midwest Tournament he was just being kind of rude to me
behind my back. Saying that I looked bad. He said I was faking my shoulder
injury, stuff like that. That is one fight I want.
Another fight that could be good is between me and Antwan (Robertson).
We fought an exhibition but I am not sure if that fight will ever take
place. He said I am too big for him but a lot of my friends that were
there thought he was bigger then me! But like I said, I will go down to
112 if that is the case. But other then that, I'm not trying to mess with
the big boys in the state yet (laughing)!
As for what is next, I think there is a possibility of getting on the
Walker (Minnesota) show in December but nothing set yet.
