INTRODUCING
DAVID LAQUE
Photo and Story by Jesse Kelley
Professional boxing returns to the Twin Cities this Saturday,
October 3rd. The five fight card takes place at the West Saint
Paul
Armory. MinnesotaBoxing.com had the chance to catch up with newcomer
David Laque (1-1) of Bloomington, who will be boxing on the card against
another exciting recent addition to the MN pro boxing scene in Levi
Cortes (2-0).
Laque, 28, says he started boxing at the age of 12 and
was hooked right away.
" My dad brought me to a boxing gym and I automatically liked it"
said Laque. "My first fight was at the Boys and Girls club in San
Antonio, Texas. I won in the third round, the fight went the distance.
From there on I moved up here to Minnesota with my mom back in 1995.
Like many fighters from the past and surely more to come,
Laque says boxing has been a way to regain focus in his life. A student
at the Academy of Arts, business division, Laque says that he is ready
to return to boxing.
"I was getting into trouble and hanging with the wrong crowd and
lost focus on boxing for a while. So now I'm getting
back into the ring."
Laque made his pro debut in Mahnomen, MN last April. Laque
fought like a pitbull as he overwhelmed local John Gordon in front of
a screaming crowd.
"I had the energy and trained well for the fight against John Gorden.
I had the drive and I was up for it. I
felt like I was king of the world."
He would experience his first setback however, four months
later when he was stopped by well known amateur and skillful MN pro
Danny Figueroa (2-0) of Hastings in round three.
"The last fight with Danny Figueroa I took two days prior to the
actual fight. I wasn't training for the fight, that's why I lost but
not the next time. I see now that I need to train harder and the next
time will be different. John Hoffman has really been a good supporter
and helped me get my boxing career started. He supported me through
my two fights and also Sean Hickman. I hope and pray to get on track
and win my next fights in the future.
The rest of the card features more exciting newcomers
to the Minnesota scene. Danny Figueroa and Hector Orozco will duke it
out in what is a must see main event. The rest of the card is as follows...
Vicente Alfaro vs Jake Backus
Gustavo Espinosa vs Juan Baltierez
Hassan Wasswa vs Antwan Robertson (exhibition)
