Eyer Takes on New Role
January 3rd, 2008
By Jesse Kelley
Duluth area pro boxer Gary Eyer has taken on the role
as amateur boxing coach at Horton's Gym in Duluth,
MN.
Eyer (4-0-1, 3 KO's) says that he and Clayton Wrazidlo have recently
filled in the coaching position for Chad Brenna, who Eyer says is
returning to college to continue his studies.
Eyer will get his first taste at matching fights for his amateurs
on January 15th as Horton's Gym will be hosting an amateur night
of boxing at Grandma's Sports Garden in Duluth.
"I am looking to help make a lot of fights. Anywhere
from 70 lbs to 200. It has been fun but really Chuck (Horton) is
the main man. He funds everything and helps with the match making
and what not" said Eyer.
Until recently, Horton's Gym fighters were without a home gym to
train in. A fire in June caused major damage to their gym and all
of the equipment inside. But recently Horton's found a new home.
Actually they have returned to their old home in Gary - New Duluth
( a neighborhood in Duluth, MN) which was the team's original gym
in 1999.
" We are back in Gary-New Duluth. It is a long drive but gas
is real cheap right now" said Eyer. "It is a good spot
with a lot of nice places to run. The gym just has a great feel
to it. When I first walked in, it was like I was home. We still
need to put a few things up like heavy bags and a 16 foot floor
ring. There will be knowhere to run and hide in that sucker (laughing)!"
In August, Eyer took on tough Illinois brawler Guadalupe Diaz. Eyer
showed skilled toughness in the fight. Eyer boxed while Diaz continually
pressed forward in a bout that ended with a crowd pleasing draw.
"I learned a lot in my last fight. But I haven't fought since
then so I just hope I will be able remember what I learned and use
it in my next one. I answered some questions that I had in my head
against Diaz. I feel like I will be a better fighter when I fight
again."
