Akondaye "Calm Before the Storm"
Fountain
By Jesse Kelley
Not too long ago, women's
boxing seemed to be on it's way to securing a spot in the world
of
boxing. With names like Christy Martin, Lucia Riker and Mia St.
John frequently being featured on tv boxing cards along with the
skills they possessed, the sport of women's boxing was beginning
to be taken serious around the world.
Recently though, time has caught up with the elite names and the
mention of women's boxing is being heard less and less in the fistic
headlines.
The door for new stars to bring the sport out of it's slump is open
and Minnesota native Akondaye Fountain wants to be part of the solution.
Born and raised in Saint
Paul and a graduate of Highland Park High School, Fountain has always
enjoyed participating in sports. She was recently inducted into
Highland's athletic Hall of Fame.
"I've always been
an athlete and enjoy watching and participating in competitive sports"
said Fountain. "I ran track, played basketball and soccer growing
up. I also ran track in college."
After graduating college,
Fountain says that she was still looking for a challenge and began
participating in fitness competitions. She slowly began to grow
frustrated with the ins and outs of that industry however and her
attention turned to the whispers she heard of women's boxing.
"There have been times that I would incorporate some boxing
training in my workouts and I really enjoyed it, so I thought I
would give boxing a try. I did my research and visited some local
boxing gyms and observed some fights before I went full speed ahead.
I didn't want to just box, I wanted to be the best female boxer
out there, so I trained really hard and fought as an amateur first.
However, there weren't many amateur boxing shows for me to participate
in. I turned pro in 2004."
Fountain is still relatively
fresh in the sport with only 9 fights and a record of 7-1-1, 4ko's.
Her most recent venture was to Germany where she lost a decision
to a local, fellow prospect.
"I lost by unanimous decision in December, 2007 against Natascha
Ragosina 16-0 (for the WBC, WIBA, GBU, and WBA title belts). We
fought in her country and I believe that the results may have been
different here in the states." Stated Fountain confidently.
Fountain's brightest
win in her eyes came in 2006 when she blasted out Veronica Rucker
at 1:34 of the first round. Fountain simply describes the TKO victory
as "Awesome"!
Fountain now resides
in Houston, Texas where she trains with some of the most marquee
names in the business but says she still has family and friends
back in Minnesota and would love the opportunity to fight in front
of them.
" I train at Savannah boxing gym." Said Fountain. "My
team consist of Ronnie Shields, Cedrick Williams and Brian Caldwell.
I have the best trainers and great support. I train with other top
athletes such as world champions Juan Diaz, Evander Holyfield, and
a host of others that will be champions in the future. I plan to
box for a few more years. My goal as stated earlier is to be the
best pound for pound female boxer. I want to be world champion.
I had my first title fight at super middleweight but my true fight
weight is junior middleweight or middleweight. Ill fight anyone
any where (In the states)."
