RODRIGUEZ CONFIDENT GOING INTO FIGHT
By Jesse Kelley

February 26th, 2011

Rodriguez: "Hopefully it will be a great night for Minnesota! Joey Abell, Jon Schmidt and myself all have important fights. Jason Litzau set the tone for Minnesota and we are going to continue it."

Corey Rodriguez (5-1-2) will travel to Chicago this Friday, January 28th to face undefeated Achour Esho (9-0) at the UIC Pavilion.
Rodriguez, who is coming off a win over Nick Runningbear, says that he and his team like their chances going into Esho's hometown.

"Runningbear ducked us a couple of times before so I was kind of shocked when I was told he wanted the fight. He was supposed to fight Javontae Starks but Starks was off so we were able to step in. I took the fight with 7 days to train and a lot of weight to lose but it worked out. We knew he had been in tough to this point. Getting rounds in the fight with Runningbear was the important thing though. I could have ripped his head off in the first round but it was nice to get the rounds in which was the plan."

"We were actually looking at Achour Esho a few months ago. He has a martial arts background, I believe he is 2-0 as an MMA fighter. He also won an Illinois state title as an amateur boxer and is now 9-0 as a pro. The fight will be at welterweight and we are about the same height. I might actually be the bigger guy in this fight (laughing)! He is a personal trainer so I know he will be in shape but so will I. He is not a very experienced fighter in the boxing ring with the amateur background that I do. I think my experience will be a big advantage. I believe the difference will be that he does not have the same type of boxing experience as I do. I plan on going into his backyard and giving him a hell of a fight. I have been fighting at middleweight for the past few years. The last four fights have been with bigger guys but Esho is a true welterweight. It will be a great experience to be in the ring with somebody my own size. I have been looking for the opportunity to fight more here at home but that hasn't happened so I have to take it back on the road. I am looking to get 5 wins in 2011 starting with this fight."
