CERRESSO FORT PREPARED FOR BATTLE

September 8, 2011
By Jesse Kelley

"Sir" Cerresso Fort (11-0) is set for the biggest test of his pro career this Friday night in Florida. Fort, who has spent the last few weeks training down south, will face Florida's Marcus Upshaw in the 21 fight veterans backyard. Upshaw is a tall and rangy fighter that has faced almost exclusively good competition while compiling a record of 13-7-1. Fort looks to continue his winning streak following a recent win over Tim Taggart Jr.

In that bout, Fort stopped the MN banger Taggart Jr. last May in Hinckley. Fort dropped Taggart in rounds 1 and 2 before the fight was stopped.

"It was a pretty good fight" said Fort looking back. "I came prepared for him (Taggart). He came at me with his best and gave it everything he had, he just didn't have the answers in the end. I wanted to give my fans a great performance. It was me going out there and getting the W. Basically any opening I saw, I went out there and tried to take advantage of them."

Taggart said before the fight that he was going to bring the fight and make it a war but Fort says his game plan wasn't effected by the pre-fight prediction of bombs. Fort says he planned to box, and that's what he did until he found an opening early.

"I didn't go in there with a macho mentality like "If you want to go to war, then we can go to war"! I knew he was going to come at me but my plan was to box all along. When I hurt someone, I always jump on them. So when I hurt him in the first round I jumped on him. It might have looked like I was going to war with him but that was just me trying to finish the fight after I had hurt him".

Fort's opponent this Friday, Marcus Upshaw is a fighter that does everything well. He has good power, good offensive skills, good defensive skills, and always show's up to fight. Upshaw also holds a win over Rochester's Scott Ball while having a KO loss to Phil Williams of Minneapolis. Fort says that Upshaw was not the original scheduled opponent but might be the best.

"We actually had a few other guys that we were originally supposed to fight" said Fort. "I forget the guys name but he is undefeated out of Detroit. A pretty good fighter with a good record. I am trying to fight the best if I can get the best as I move up the ladder. But that guy turned the fight down as soon as I started training for him. There was another good fighter, a southpaw from another country that turned the fight down also. So we are definitely looking to step it up here and I believe that Marcus Upshaw is every bit as good as those guys. I really don't know a lot about Upshaw. I have seen a little bit of him and know that he is tall and rangy. He is a boxer, a good boxer. He is a decent, legit opponent and this should be a good fight for me at this point in my career. "

Fort has spent the last few weeks in Florida training at the 4th Street Gym and says he is in top shape. The showcase bout between Fort and Upshaw might be in Florida, but the Saint Paul native says he welcomes the challenge of fighting in enemy territory.

"I am so excited to be able to showcase my skills to the Florida people. I love fighting back home in Minnesota but it's time to get out there and take that next step. I will be back fighting in Minnesota soon but now it's time to go out there against a good opponent and bring that win back home."

Minnesota fight fans are always watching and waiting to see who the next local fighter will be to make an impact on the road. Fort says that he sees a lot of talent in Minnesota and welcomes the challenge of becoming the name people think of when Minnesota boxing is brought up.

"We've got Caleb Truax who is undefeated" said Fort. "I feel like me and Caleb are the up and coming professional boxing athletes right now here in Minnesota that are looking to carry the torch. We have Javontae (Starks) who's young but he's coming right behind us. He has time to get there. Right now I feel like I am one of the faces. Minnesota has some good fighters and I do feel like I am one of them ready to make an impact. Believe me, when I get the chances to step up, I am going to take them. Like this fight against Upshaw, I am going to take them. I love winning and I am going to do whatever it takes in my power to make it to the top. And that begins before I get in the ring. The preparation out of the ring is just as important as it is showing up the night of the fight. There is going to be a crowd in front of me Friday night that won't be my crowd. They may boo and this and that but those are the elements I will have to deal with. I have to take those situations and turn them into positive energy. Use the crowd's yelling as motivation, do what I do in the ring and bring home the victory."

Note: The bout will not be televised but Cerresso says that he will have somebody with him taping and we hope to have that available online shortly after for the MN fans to watch.
