Introducing Zach Schumach
"
I am ready to tear someones head off and start making some statements.""
May 22nd, 2010
Not much was known of Zach Schumach back in April of 2009
when the cage fighter stepped between the boxing ropes at the Target
Center. Jason Litzau, Matt Vanda, and Cerresso Fort, were all being
featured on the highly anticipated rivalry showdown card between Wilton
Hilario and Allen Litzau.
Schumach boxed in the opening bout against Rice Street favorite Donny
Tierney. Schumach held his own and his performance convinced promotor's
to book him again two months later. Schumach would box a total of four
matches in 2009, most recently winning a rematch with Tierney in Hinckley.
While most mma fighters turn to boxing to improve their striking, Schumach
has found a second sport to call his own. The MMA/Boxer is back in action
tonight at the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen, MN where he is ready
to face Detroit Lakes' Ryan Gronvold. Schumach talked about his fighting
background and his bout set for tonight...
"Well basically I have been in wrestling since 3rd
grade. When I went up to college, I got into mma because the guys in
the area trained at our college wrestling room and I started talking
to them and rolling with them and soon after started fighting. I was
always dominant on the ground but what I started to notice was when
two wrestlers fought each other, it wound up kind of stale because we
all know the same moves and it's much more calculated. I also never
had any formal training with my hands but I always felt like I could
hold my own when we would spar at practice. So I started Working with
Butch Hajiceck in Grand Forks in 2007, and fell in love with the sport.
Since then I feel as though my hands have come a long way. Then one
day I got a Facebook Message from Corey Rapecz asking if I wanted to
Box at the Target Center for my Pro Debut, a venue I have always wanted
to compete in but never was afforded the opportunity when competing
in MMA, which is a trend that has stuck in the last few years of my
fighting career. Boxing may be overshadowed by MMA right now but Boxing
still has the money and the Fighters are treated much better.
Now in Practice I can literally play with newer students trying to learn
the sport. There is a lot more showboating and taunting in boxing because
there isn't that big of an immediate threat such as a huge leg kick
coming if you stick your chin out in a taunt. Not to mention there is
a big learning curve in this sport and if your not comfortable with
your hands, it shows. And someone who is comfortable with their hands
can really make you look bad.
As far as this fight goes, I'm trying for a second round
KO. I know Tyler Gould took him (Gronvold) out in the first once. I
used to spar with Tyler and I know I can deliver the same power, but
I like to warm up a bit and test my opponent out in the first round.
My trainer right now, John Hoffman, does have a relationship with Gronvold
but I'm sorry, right now he's standing in the way of my career and I
will absolutely destroy him. I have lost a couple of times because of
conditioning and not being prepared, but I guarantee that will not be
the case this time around. I am in extremely good shape and ready
to tear someone's head off and start making some statements."
