GEORGE PREDICTS KNOCKOUT
By Jesse Kelley
January 25th, 2010
The stage has been set for this Friday night at the UIC
Pavillion in Chicago, Ill. Phil "The Drill" Williams meets
Donovan "Da Bomb" George in a midwest showdown between two
confident sluggers. Minnesotaboxing.com spoke with Williams days ago
about the match and recently had the chance to ask George a few questions
as well.
George became the first man to stop the ultra tough Canadian Jason Naugler
in his last outing and predicts the same outcome this Friday. George
shared some background information on himself as well as his bold predictions
for his clash with Williams. Here is what Donovan had to say...

As an introduction to the Minnesota boxing fans, can
you talk briefly about how you got into boxing and also your amateur
career highlights?
My father bought me my first pair of boxing gloves when Iwas 5 or 6
years old. My dad hung a punching bag in our garage and it was a normal
thing for me and my brothers to punch the bag practically everyday.
I always remember that hitting that bag in the garage just made me feel
so good.
As an Amateur fighter i have won the;
2001 Chicago Park District Champion Novice (147lbs).
2001 Chicago Golden Gloves Champion Novice (147lbs).
2002 Chicago Golden Gloves Champion Novice (178lbs).
2003 Chicago Golden Gloves Champion Open (165lbs).
I really feel proud of wining my amateur titles because
I have a professional style that is not really made for Amateur boxing
and I still won titles. And in Chicago, to win titles is a big thing
with the tough Amateur circuit that it has. So I am really happy that
I did good in the amateurs with the boxing style that I have.
One thing that stands out after watching youtube video of you besides
the boxing skills is the athleticism. Post victory back flips and such,
did you participate in other sports growing up besides boxing?
I like different sports. Football, Baseball, Softball, Track & Field
and I play a little bit socially; but I am a full time fighter and that's
what I do. My victory back flip is something that just happens without
me realizing that I am doing it. I beleive that I have pretty good athleticism
and that's because I train constantly and try to improve my body in
every way possible. I beleive that I have to sacrifice a lot of things,
to be able to get my body to do the things that I want it to do; so
I sacrifice.
You rarely see two exciting local knockout artists looking to break
out to the national scene fight each other. In a way, Chicago and Minnesota
can be considered backyard stuff when looking at it on a midwestern
level. Talk about how the fight with Phil Willams came about and your
decision to take the fight.
Cestus Management, who is my manager likes to fight me as much as it
possibly can and my promoters Warriors Boxing & 8 Count Productions
are all working together to put events on to keep me fighting. I had
my last fight on November 6th 2009 where I destroyed Jason Naugler who
had never been knocked out before and had been gone the distance with
the likes of Light-Heavyweight World Champion Chad Dawson. My manager
and promoters selected Williams and I said to them that I would fight
anyone they wanted. That's how the fight with Williams was made.
How familiar are you with Phil Williams? Have you
seen him fight, and if so what are your thoughts on him as a fighter?
I have seen Williams fight and to be honest I am not impressed. There
is nothing to even study with this fighter, he is just plain old Phil
from Minnesota who loses every time he gets stepped up a little bit.....well
this time he is getting stepped up more than just a little bit....he
is getting stepped up a lot.
This question might belong as part of the prior one
but Phil's last fight against Matt Vanda was televised to the mid-west
on Fox Sports. Assuming you watched the fight, can you share your thoughts
on his performance?
Matt Vanda is not really a Super Middleweight, he is a 154lb fighter.
That's where he had most of his fights and success when he was solid
and in his prime. Williams boxed a blown up Matt Vanda at Super-Middleweight
and still got beat and blew the fight. Like I said earlier Williams
can't step it up and his record proves that.
Is Vanda somebody you would like to face in the future?
After I beat Williams I would love to fight Matt Vanda. He is an experienced
veteran who is very cagey and knows all the tricks that veterans use.
If my management wants me to fight him then I will. Like I said, I will
fight anyone. All I want to do is fight.
On paper Phil Williams looks to have the edge in opponent competition.
However, you
have
faced some tough guys as well and taken them out early. Do you believe
this will be the biggest test of both of your careers?
I don't see Williams as a test for me. This will be an easy fight. I
have trained hard like I train for all of my fights. I will give Williams
a beating which will be brutally painful and remind him that he can't
be compared to me and that he made the wrong decision when he agreed
to fight me. As far as comparing his career to mine, he has lost 2 times
in 13 fights and got brutally knocked out in one of his loses. I am
undefeated in 18 fights and destroyed every opponent that has been put
in front of me.
You have talked about Phil Williams. Can you describe yourself as a
boxer and what you bring that will negate what he brings on the 29th?
I am the total package. I don't have to negate what Williams will bring
on the 29th, because he brings absolutely nothing that can stop me.
I asked Phil to make a prediction on this fight recently in an interview
and before I could finish the question, he said "Knockout".
You seem like a very confident fighter as well. What are your thoughts
on Phil coming into your hometown and boldly predicting a knockout victory?
Williams will be punished, dissected and brutally broken down. The longer
the fight lasts, the more Williams will be punished and asking me to
knock him out........so I will have put him out of his misery and knock
him out.
It seems that with your ring walks, interviews, and
of course fights, the one word used most often to describe you would
be "entertainer". Most Minnesota fans making the trip are
curious what to expect from you when January 29th rolls around. Can
you talk a little about the showmanship side of what you have brought
to the ring in the past and what we can expect from you when fight time
comes?
The fans love entertainment and I think that me and the fans have a
great relationship because I give them what they want, which is true
hardcore fighting and personality. I am always ready to speak with whoever
approaches me and I really like talking to people, so I feel that I
have an obligation to give everyone the best show that I can. And I
promise that I will put on a show and be at my best and take care of
business on January 29th.
I want to thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to answer
these questions. Is there anything you would like to add in closing?
I would like to thank everyone that has supported me and stuck by me
in my career and the loyal fans that keep coming to see me fight and
on January 29th, I will give everybody a sweet victory.
