KOLLE-VANDA, LAASE, DULUTH ACTION TONIGHT
By Jesse Kelley
June 17th, 2010
Grandma's Sports Garden in Duluth will be the place to
check out pro boxing exhibitions tonight. The main exhibition puts
Andy
Kolle (21-2) and Matt Vanda (42-11) in the ring for a third time. The
State champ Kolle was victorious in the first two exciting meetings
and says he is looking forward to getting in the ring with Vanda again.
"I was hoping we would be able to get a different fight up here
but the commission didn't want to approve any opponents, which is cool
because they are doing their job too. I agreed to do the Vanda fight
again because I didn't want to fight somebody who would come in overweight
and out of shape just to lay down, we wanted to give the fans a great
show. With Vanda, we know exactly what we are gonna get and that is
non stop action from bell to bell."
Duluth's RJ Laase (4-1) will be returning after a year
long absence from competition. Laase traded punches with Hector Orozco
in his bout, dropping a split decision to the "Fighting Chihuahua"
Orozco in Duluth.
Laase's mother going through chemotherapy among other personal dilema's
contributed to a sub par training camp and a sporadic sleep schedule
which led to a performance he was not happy with in that bout.
"I'm not really the type to make excuses on why I lost the fight
except that it wasn't me in the ring and he beat me on my worst night
and on his best." Said Laase on the fight. Laase confirms that
his mother is since cancer free and that he has rejuvenated the drive
to box at his highest level.
"Do I want to fight Orozco again? Fu--ing right I
do!" said Laase when asked about a rematch. "He beat Jeremy
(McLaurin) and now Danny (Figueroa). Both fighters with records I would
love to have on my resume. Like I said before, I take nothing away from
his (Orozco's) win against me but it wouldn't happen if we fought again."
Tonight, Laase faces an mma fighter named Orie Bailey.
" I started camp at 160 and was on my way to 140 until I was told
he will fight at 144. I guess he is 4-0 as an amateur mma fighter but
that doesn't mean anything to me. We aren't in the cage, we are in my
world, a place I am very familiar with. I had great sparring with Andy
(Kolle), Gary (Eyer) and Tyler (Hultin) and a few more experienced amateurs.
I feel like a million right now."
Laase says that he plans to fight at 140 from here on
out, a weight he feels stronger, faster and in top form.
" Me and Shark (Chuck Horton) have a plan to stay as busy as possible
for the next 12 months, with a fight every month or two which is very
possible with all the fighters in our state at that weight."
The rest of the card includes Duluth area boxers Gary
Eyer (listed on boxrec as facing Randi Ronchi). Tyler Hultin will also
see action. Details have been hard to come by on this show but the Minnesota
Boxing Forum has some chatter that reveals Dave Peterson taking on Troy
Lowry in another exhibition.
