CATCHING UP WITH WELTERWEIGHT MOHAMMED KAYONGO
By:Ramon Hough

Three months ago, Mohammed Kayongo (11-1-1, 8 KO's) was an undefeated prospect trying to establish himself as a legitimate young contender. Kayongo was scheduled to fight another undefeated prospect, Shamone Alvarez, in his second fight on Showtime's ShoBox series. Alvarez jumped on Kayongo right away and knocked him out in the first round. It was a disappointing loss for Kayongo, but he says he'll be a better fighter because of it.
Kayongo spoke to Minnesota Boxing at the weigh-ins for the Grover Wiley/Luciano Perez and Zach Walters/Mike Wood fight card. We would like to thank Kayongo for taking the time to talk about that fight, what he learned from it and when we should expect to see him back in the ring. Here is what he had to say:

What have you been up to since losing to Alvarez?

I've been doing good. I've been training and hopefully I'm coming back (soon).

How do you feel about what happened in your last fight?
I don't feel nothing, man. You know, this is a game. You walk out of the ring with a win or a loss. Its normal. I'm a fighter and I lost. Hopefully I'm coming back to push it to another level.

What did you take from that fight? Did you learn anything?

Each fight you're in, you learn something out of it. It doesn't matter if its a loss or a win, you learn. I'm a young guy coming up and, hopefully, I'll be able to take it to another level and be a world champion. It doesn't matter how long it takes, I'm on my way.

What have you been working on to improve?

I've been working on my mistakes. Every time, any fighter...every guy makes mistakes. I'm in the gym every day.

What kind of a mistake are you referring to?
Like I said, every time you learn something. Every day you come to the gym, you learn something. Learning never stops.

When should we expect to see you back in the ring?

I'll be back soon. Probably April 16th.

What should we expect to see when you do come back?

When I come back, the fight I lost. This guy that I'm going to be fighting is going to pay for that (loss). He's going to pay for that.

Anything else that you want to say or add?

I just want to send my shouts to all my fans. I love you all and we're going to be back.

---Note: Alvarez has continued winning since the Kayongo fight, including another TKO win on Shobox on February 18th. He is now 11-0, 8 KO's.---
