UpperCut
December 18th Results By Ryan Hamilton There was another
great night of fights at Uppercut Gym last Saturday. Fighting at 145 pounds
were Gary Eyer from Duluth and Steven Jones from COD. Eyer proved to be to much
for Steven Jones in this fight. And after Jones was knocked down 3 times, the
ref stopped the fight. Eyer by RSC. Next up was the first of two female
fights of the night. Uppercut's Sarah Mickelson went up against Caledonia's Amy
Augedahl. Mickelson had this beautiful hook to the head, she used to rock Augedahl
in the first round. Augedahl tried to work Mickelson's body but that wasn't phasing
her a bit. Mickelson dominated the fight. Mickelson by Dec. At 125
pounds, Rice Streets Oscar Soto fought Jose Hilario from COD. I've been waiting
to see these guys fight again since the summer. Oscar Soto won a controversial
decision against Jose Hilario at Canterbury Park this summer that left everyone
wondering. Both these guys are great fighters, they are about the same height
and they both have long reach. Saturday night, when Jose Hilario stepped into
that ring he had NO intentions of losing. Both guys had a good jab, Oscars may
be slightly faster, but he didn't let his hands go like he ususally does. He jabbed
a little, but he just wasn't the same Soto I'm used to seeing. Jose on the other
hand fought a good fight, he let his hands go, put his combinations together perfectly,
he was a complete package that night. Excellent fight! Jose Hilario By Dec.
Both Joey Claus from Rice Street and Angel Soto from COD have fast hands,
and are overall good fighters. I saw Joey Claus beat a guy taller then Soto the
night before so I knew that the height advantage Soto had would not be an issue.
Soto had better footwork but Claus always beat him to the punch. All three
rounds these kids just let there fast hands go, nonstop action! They both did
a good job! Joey Claus by Dec. Caledonia's Kevin Schuldt beat COD's Zeek
Gutierrez by Dec. Rumble Boy's Luke McDevitt beat Uppercut's Alex Vazquez
by RSC A special congrats goes out to Matthew Carlson from UMAIC. He beat
Xavier Ballin in the Silver Gloves Championship bout. Uppercut's Becca
Gilgen beat Val Holman from Duluth. This was a good fight and I can't wait to
see the rematch. R.J. Laase from Duluth beat Sean Johnson from Rice Street
Gym. Happy Holidays to everyone and see you at Uppercut's next amateur
show on January 15, 2005
